July 2017 Musical Travelogue: Waiting and Wondering and Waiting…★

Hello Late July,

I’ve been wondering if I’d make it to sending you this note. Looks like I did. I had hoped if I procrastinated it long enough, I’d be writing it with the new little one snuggled against my chest. My mom gave birth to me 3 weeks early and so I was hoping that would be the way that Craig and I’s little revolutionary would come into the world. But now, we’re getting close to our due date, so it seems that won’t be our luck. However…labor could begin at anytime…

We’re looking forward to welcoming this child into a vibrant and creative household! I hope the little revolutionary wants to learn to play the cajon sooner rather than later. Baby definitely seems to have good rhythm if the rocks and rolls inside my belly have anything to do with that.

Thank you Adrianna! I love this image.

I’ve been grappling with my transition into Mama Musicianhood. This kid came into our lives in a totally unplanned and unexpected way. This child has definitely already beaten the odds. I had the urge to keep this development a secret for a long time. How will I balance a child into my career of touring, performing and teaching? Will people offer me less gigs because they’ll assume what will or won’t work for me because I’m now a mama? I’ve done lots of thinking, writing and crying about this over these last 9 months. I am now determined to use this development to my advantage. And I know that I’ll be a BETTER mother to the little revolutionary if I CONTINUE to be a musician and songwriter. I am honored that I get to bring a new human into the world. It’s truly magical! There is a divine gift coming to fruition inside my body and I am so grateful.

As you read this, I am probably on my hands and knees scrubbing our bamboo floors (unless I’m in labor). Oh yeah baby, you did turn on my nesting instinct…I’ve been decorating our house for you. We’ve now got four different places for you to sleep. We’ve been given quite a few newborn onesies, one covered in dinosaurs, one in dogs and one that was hand-painted by our wedding photographer. Along with the floors, I’m hoping to clean out my dresser and make some buttery oatmeal cookies before you arrive. And hopefully, I’ll get to writing a new song…

ONEZEE FUND:
For the next few months, I’ll be birthing this baby and learning to be a musician mama. My income as an artist is integral to my families household expenses. What I make as a touring songwriter, performer and teaching artist is comparable to what my partner Craig makes at his full-time salaried position. So for at least the first couple of months our income will be less while our expenses will be more. Click the button below to visit the online registry Craig and I made on Babylist. There’s something called “Parental Leave” that’s listed third down on the page after the Ramones onesie and the postpartum kit. You can make a donation there if you want. I truly appreciate my community, which stretches far and wide! Your contribution to my maternity sabbatical will help me continue to make music and teach while I also learn to be a musician mama.

I’m grateful for the chance to reach out before baby comes! I’ve met many wonderful new folks this summer during my June tours to Montana and Colorado, and at shows here at home in Salt Lake City. For some people new to my email list, this is the first musical travelogue you’ve received. Apologies for it’s late arrival. Last week of July. I think it’s the latest in the month I’ve EVER sent it… oh well… let’s hope baby doesn’t follow suit…

I’ll let you know when Baby Dillard-England (we’re going to be surprised by the gender) joins us in the world. Scroll down to preview my next batch of performances in Utah and New Mexico. We’re planning to bring the little wild one in the baby wrap (and the car seat). Hey baby? I love you already and I’m finally getting ready for you. I hope you come out soon.

Best wishes for whatever it is that you are birthing this summer… we are always birthing something.

Mindy

Wild Geese
By Mary Oliver

You do not have to be good.
You do not have to walk on your knees
For a hundred miles through the desert, repenting
You only have to let the soft animal of your body love what it loves. Tell me about your despair, yours, and I will tell you mine.
Meanwhile the world goes on.
Meanwhile the sun and the clear pebbles of the rain
are moving across the landscapes, over the prairies
and the deep trees, the mountains and the rivers.
Meanwhile the wild geese, high in the clean blue air,
are heading home again.
Whoever you are, no matter how lonely,
the world offers itself to your imagination,
calls to you like the wild geese, harsh and exciting
— over and over
announcing your place in the family of things.

June Musical Travelogue 2017: The Peace of Wild Things❥

Welcome June…

It’s hard to believe I’m already writing another musical travelogue. Life has been very full. I’m sure it has for you too. I’ve been trying to clear my head and decide which creative direction to go towards next… there is the new album I want to make, tours and shows to plan, lessons and songwriting classes to teach…and the book I want to write…
I can try to do it all at once…but it doesn’t really work, does it? 🙁 It feels pretty good to come clean about that…

Do you ever feel this way? What do you do? I think maybe the answer is to give up knowing. What do you think?

I’m headed north to Montana this weekend to do some Princess Fearless shows at libraries (in Bozeman and a few smaller places I’ve never been: Helena, Augusta and Lincoln). I’ll also be doing a house concert on Saturday night with Amber Ikeman in Bozeman. (Amber is making a new album!) Then I’ll zoom back to Salt Lake City next week for a show that I’m SOOO excited about with Bronwen Beecher and Tara Shupe on June 17th!!! They are incredible musicians (and really nice humans) that really make me step up my game. I like challenges and they push me to play and sing my best.

Bronwen and I did special music at the United Church of Christ in Holladay the other day. It felt like magic…

Then, I’ll be headed to Steamboat Springs, CO with the Princess Fearless Trio for a big festival gig with the Strings Music Festival. Can’t wait for that!

And after that a wild thing is coming…this wild thing has been growing inside me since last November or so. There is a baby, now the size of large coconut, curled up in my uterus. This 3 1/2 pound little one’s kicks, rolls, punches and jabs won’t let me forget that they are real. This ultrasound is from almost 12 weeks ago now…but I love that strong bicep. Craig and I are eager to meet this little one that is so intent on entering our world.

The Peace of Wild Things
By Wendell Berry

When despair for the world grows in me
and I wake in the night at the least sound
in fear of what my life and my children's lives may be,
I go and lie down where the wood drake
rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds.
I come into the peace of wild things
who do not tax their lives with forethought
of grief. I come into the presence of still water.
And I feel above me the day-blind stars
waiting with their light. For a time
I rest in the grace of the world, and am free.

Musical Travelogue May 2017: Hoodoos and Peekaboos💗

Helloooo Alll!!

I got married two weeks ago. It was amazing and wonderful and one of my happiest days. I got to sing the song I wrote about him during our reception. Great friends played the music and officiated (Thank you Amanda West, Otter Creek Duo and Rev. Kelly Ryan ♡). We had a field of purple tulips and a tower of gold cupcakes. We made a playlist that included Joni Mitchell and Morphine songs. It was beautiful!

Then we went on a honeymoon to Bryce Canyon where we reveled in the hoodoos and peekaboos…

For the last meal of our honeymoon, on our way home along Utah’s most spectacular mountain and red rock enshrined Hwy 12 we ate this fantastic brunch at Hell’s Backbone Grill. Oh yeah… shirred eggs, sage butter and biscuits and gravy… You really should go.

A few days after we returned we played at the Garage on Beck in North Salt Lake for the second time. I’m loving having Craig play his upright bass on some of my songs. I became an immediate aunt to five when we got married. Our nephew sent us his Flat Stanley to take on an adventure. So his Flat Stanley went to our performance at the Garage on Beck.♡ Thanks to the gamely crowd for posing so well!

You can see my upcoming shows down below….Next up is a Family Concert sponsored by the Intermountain Acoustic Music Association on May 13th and then a house concert at Kris Thorne’s on May 14th, which is Mother’s Day. In early June I’ll drive north to Montana for a week of shows, (including one with Amber Ikeman) returning to share the stage with Bronwen Beecher and Tara Shupe for a powerhouse songwriters in the round gig on June 17th. Yes! A week or so later, I’ll head to Colorado for a few shows in the Steamboat Springs area…and then gratefully…I’ll come home to the Salt Lake Valley.
I’m hoping to launch a few new projects this summer. Hopefully one of them in time for my birthday on June 4th. I intend to write a book. More on that soon…
Wishing you love and a happy May.

Sincerely,
♡Mindy

The Unexpected Beautiful Things ❤️ March 2017 Musical Travelogue

Dear Everybody,
Aren’t those redbuds magical? Look at this picture that Craig took outside of our new house…

Redbuds (or Cercis canadensis) are one of the first flowering trees of spring…I take them as a good sign. I love that I’m getting married to horticulturalist — in three weeks! He always helps me see everything anew. What signs of life have you seen in nature and in your own world? My life has become very complicated lately. I’m searching out what is beautiful. I’m especially looking for what is beautiful in the unexpected.

I’m going on a quick tour to the Portland area from April 6th – 9th. I’m playing in Hillsboro with Dan Abrahamson at one of my favorite spots, Influence Music Hall (show fb page) and with Halelupe at another favorite place, Artichoke Music (tickets). I’m looking forward to being back in a place that still feel a lot like home for a few days.

I had a house concert in the the N. Portland area fall through for Friday, April 7th. I’m on the hunt for one more small, intimate house concert for that evening. Something outside of Portland would be good. I could even skip up into Washington for the night. I would appreciate any suggestions or connections.

My favorite gig recently was speaking and performing at the Salt Lake City Oasis (such an amazing community!). I was invited to share my music and speak about my eating disorder recovery. I shared songs and stories from my 2015 album and one-woman show “How to Survive a Poison Apple,” a revisionist fairytale folk rock opera that’s is all about my eating disorder recovery. I made a slide show and mixed my songs and stories into the presentation. The community was very engaged and they asked great questions. Thanks for having me. I love my eating disorder awareness and advocacy work. I want to do more and more of it. And, in the next few years, I want to write a book…

I am currently booking fall 2017 and 2018. I’ll be touring up and back to the FAR-West conference in Bellevue in early October. I’m looking for house concerts, venues, kids’ shows and eating disorder speaking engagements along the way from Salt Lake City to the Puget Sound. I’ll also be going to other places, yet unknown. Let me know if there is somewhere you think I should go.

I love to hear from you. Write me back and let me know what’s going on for you. What unexpected beautiful things have you seen…?

❤️ Mindy
